Makoto Yokomizo is one of the main characters in the AKB0048 anime. She is also one of the AKB0048's trainees.
Appearance
Makoto has periwinkle, shoulder-length hair tied into a side ponytail with a pink ribbon and blue eyes. Like all the AKB0048's trainees, she has a heart-shaped lining in her hair and eyes.
Personality
Although excited to be able to try out for AKB0048, Makoto is extremely nervous and anxious, often prone to outbursts where she negatively compares herself to the other girls. For example, when she compares herself to the other girls physically as she is insecure about her small chest and her waist. Sonata calls her 'Grumbly' ('Buddha' in the English Dub) because of this negativity.
Plot
Season 1
Makoto is first seen in her cabin in Episode 2, lamenting her decision to leave her parents as the ship pulls away from her home planet,

indicating that like Nagisa, she ran away. Makoto first meets Nagisa, Yuka, and Orine on board the ship to the auditions, where she is shocked out of her whits that the other girls are auditioning. Later, at lunch, she talks with the girls about how she came to be on the ship and why she decided to audition. When the DES invade the ship, Makoto is the first to panic, and has to be guided away by Suzuko to go hide. While in hiding, the soldiers attack, and Makoto in a panic runs from the hiding place, while Suzuko chases after her. Later, both show up in the shuttle bay waiting for the other girls to escape.
During Episode 3, Makoto is her usual crybaby self, at first cheery at the thought of performing "Beginner" after Tsubasa's announcement, but then is horrified at the training she must endure. She is one of the most vocally opposed girls to the training, and says so as they get ready for bed. But eventually, she proves her worth and gets with the program, and assists those girls who were eliminated early on the guerilla planet. Because of this, she is one of the seven girls chosen to be a part of the 77th Generation of AKB0048.
Makoto appears in the group scenes during Episode 4, but says very little. She appears in the last scene singing with the other girls.
In Episode 5, Makoto is dragged off by Kanata and Mimori to be trained in stamina. However, Nyan-Nyan shows up and takes Makoto and Kanata, determined to show them how to use their lusicous legs and pheremones. At first, both girls are not having it. But by the end of the episode, Makoto is chanting "sexy" along with Kanata and Mimori and trying to make herself look even sexier.
In Episode 6, Makoto is in the room watching the promo video along with the other girls. When the video is over and Tsubasa Katagiri informs them as to what the video is for, Makoto freaks out, saying that she will be known as
the "Whale Waisted Idol" because she didn't lose two centimeters off her waist. After she calms down a little, Yukirin, Takamina, and Sayaka burst in, and say they are here to advise the girls on the importance of a handshake event. Sayaka gives Makoto a hard handshake, to the point when Makoto begins to squirm, and after Sayaka lets go, she is seen nursing her throbbing hands.
Makoto is nervous as usual on the day of the handshake event. Sonata wanted her to be a shield for both her and Orine, but she strongly refuses. She in spite of this does go out to the booth and enthusiastically greets her fans. When the attack occurs, Makoto takes a micsaber and supposedly goes to attack, but is later shown running away from the DES in a panic. After the battle, she is shown exhausted and dirty from the fight.
Season 2 - Next Stage
In Episode 18, she becomes clumsy and accidentally reveals their presence to DES and starts to blame herself for it.
Makoto touched by Higashino's actions.
Later, she falls while the others are fighting and once again becomes unhappy, but her secret fan, the person who was "babysitting" them earlier, Private Higashino, reveals himself as her fan and cheers her up, telling her that her failures always warmed his heart. This gives her courage to shut down the reactor and making the mission a sucess. While she was falling into the control panel, she gave birth to her Kirara, which shines in accordance to her determination. Although she missed on her first try, she did not give up, and succeeded. Private Higashino then helps the girls by closing the airlock, touching Makoto.

- Sonata calls her "Grumbly" because of her sighs and negative thinking. Sonata, however, by the end of Episode 18, upgrades her nickname to "Grumblator".
- She is the oldest of the 77th Generation members.
- Higashino calls her "Makocchi".
- Makoto's attitude is reminescent of Usagi from Sailor Moon.
- Makoto shares the same first name as Makoto Kino, better known as Sailor Jupiter, as well as a similar hairstyle, as both girls sport ponytails.
